Storing Dahlia Tubers - how to store dahlia tubers before the planting season (April-May)?
If your order is delivered before the planting time (April - May), you will learn here how to store dahlia tubers according to methods used by dahlia growers. We send out all summer bloomers just before they can be planted. This keeps them fresh and reduces hassle for you. Storing dahlia tubers isn't rocket science, but we still need to pay attention. Good to know: storing dahlia tubers before the planting season (from April to May) and storing them after the flowering season (from autumn onwards) doesn't differ significantly.
1. Receive Dahlia Tubers? First, check the tubers for dehydration, rot, or potential diseases
Storing dahlia tubers means first acknowledging that all flower bulbs are alive! When your order arrives at home, we recommend checking the tubers for dehydration, rot, or potential diseases. Do this to the extent that you can see with the naked eye and feel with your fingers. After that, you can store your dahlia tubers according to the steps below. If you notice that there is something wrong with your tubers or if you're in doubt, please let us know immediately. We will advise you and provide replacements if necessary. You can find our return policy here. If you have purchased flower bulbs from another retailer or grower, we recommend the same.
2. Storing Dahlia Tubers in a breathable packaging keeps them healthy
Storing dahlia tubers in a ventilated bag from The Bulb Farmers
If you've placed your order with The Bulb Farmers, you can store the dahlia tubers in the bag they were delivered in. The bag has air holes, allowing them to breathe freely.
TIP 1: Storing Dahlia Tubers in Newspaper
If you accidentally opened the bag or if you purchased them elsewhere without a (ventilated) bag, no problem. You can store the dahlia tubers in old newspaper or in a shoebox. Other materials are also fine, as long as they keep the tubers dry and don't suffocate them. If you can't find anything suitable, you can also store your dahlia tubers in a netlon bag (mandarin bag) and hang them up.
TIP 2: When storing dahlia tubers, it's important to minimize air movement around the tuber. Otherwise, your tubers may dry out.
3. Storing Dahlia Tubers in a dark and cool (5°C - 15°C) place
After packing, you can store the tubers in a dark and cool place. However, make sure that no outside air reaches the tubers. Otherwise, they might become too dry. You can store dahlia tubers in areas of your home that meet the following criteria:
- Dry
- Dark
- A constant cool room temperature (5°C - 15°C)
- No chance of outside air entering the room
- Little to no air movement in the room
TIP : When storing dahlia tubers, make sure to strictly adhere to the recommended storage temperature! A place that's too warm or too cold can jeopardize the blooming of the flowers. Additionally, excessive temperature fluctuations are not good for flower bulbs.
4. Storing Dahlia Tubers in Different Areas of the House
Possible places where you can store the tubers indoors include:
- A pantry or kitchen cabinet
- A cellar or cellar cabinet
5. Storing Dahlia Tubers for Approximately 5 Months
Storing dahlia tubers under ideal conditions allows you to store them for up to 4 months without sprouting. If you want to store dahlia tubers for a longer period, it's wiser to order new, fresh tubers.
