Meet Jaco and Dirk

Meet the daffodil farmers. Your guides in the world of flower bulbs.

1. Planting period for daffodils – When to plant daffodils?

You can plant daffodils from September to December. Keep in mind that you should only plant daffodils until the first frost arrives. After that, the chances of success decrease. After waiting for a few months, they emerge again in the spring. They bloom from March to April.

TIP: Don't wait until the last moment to plant daffodils. Plant your daffodils on time so that they can establish strong roots. This means they will be sufficiently strengthened to survive the winter.

2. Location for planting daffodils – Planting daffodils in a sunny spot is recommended

You can plant daffodils anywhere in your garden. However, the farmers advise us all to plant daffodils in a spot with partial sun/shade. Especially in a bit more shade. Because planting daffodils in the shade ensures that the blooming period lasts longer. Furthermore, the temperature can be quite cool when they bloom, which automatically gives your daffodils a longer blooming period. Yes!

TIP: Daffodils bloom first in spring. You can plant daffodils next to other flower bulbs without them affecting each other.

3. Draining soil – Planting daffodils is best done in well-draining soil

Going a step further: the soil should always be slightly moist. Planting daffodils should not be done in soil that is too dry or too wet. Indeed, anything with 'too' in front of it is hardly ever good. Except for content...

4. Soil preparation – First loosen the soil, then you can plant daffodils

Before planting daffodils, the soil must first be loosened. The soil should be 'airy' enough so that your daffodil bulbs can root well. And as you read at the beginning, so that they eventually establish good 'rooting'.

TIP: Good to know (and emphasize): planting daffodils is possible in any soil type, as long as it doesn't become too wet.

5. Fertilization during planting daffodils – Fertilization is not necessary.

Usually, you can plant daffodils without needing to add fertilizers. When should you? That depends. It's up to you to assess whether you have a nutrient-rich soil or not (see tip).

6. Planting Distance for Planting Daffodils – Maintain a Distance of 20 cm Between All Bulbs

We plant the bulbs of daffodils approximately 20 cm apart. This creates a delightful spectacle of color without too many gaps between all your plants.

TIP: The width of an adult's fist is approximately +/- 10 cm. With children's hands, you can be even more precise. It's an excellent reason to involve all (grand)children in gardening!

7. Planting depth for daffodils – Plant each bulb at a depth of approximately 7 cm

Daffodils should be planted at a depth of about 7 cm per bulb. Ensure that each bulb is covered with an ample amount of soil after planting.

TIP: No tip, but we really want to emphasize that it's essential that your bulbs are completely covered with soil. If you see the bulbs reappear after watering them following planting, sprinkle some extra soil on top.

8. Planting Narcissus – Plant Narcissus with the 'Nose' Upward

Narcissus bulbs have a nose, which is the pointed end of the bulb. When planting Narcissus, the nose should point upward. This is where the new plant will grow from. Planting the bulbs upside down will require extra energy for the plants to grow upwards. Energy that unfortunately won't be directed towards the growth of beautiful flowers. And that's something we want to avoid.

TIP: When planting narcissus in the fall (which is actually recommended), cover the bulbs after planting. This will protect them from frost. You can cover them, for example, with some straw or fallen autumn leaves.

9. Watering during planting narcissus – Make the soil lightly moist before planting

When planting narcissus, the planting hole should be moist before you place the bulbs in it. This helps them acclimate to their new home more quickly and facilitates easier root establishment.

TIP 1: Planting (and caring for) narcissus is best done with rainwater or perhaps ditch water. Tap water works fine, but it contains more minerals and lime. Not ideal when planting narcissus, which should produce the world's most beautiful flowers.

TIP 2: Not a tip, but interesting to know. When planting and later caring for narcissus, you won't have to deal with slugs or other insects. A reassuring thought.
