In this article, you'll learn how to store allium bulbs (also known as ornamental onions). The allium growers will explain everything you need to know. At The Bulb Farmers, we only ship allium bulbs during the planting season when you can actually plant them. This way, they stay freshest and you have less hassle. Of course, it may happen that you've already received your order but want to wait a while before planting and store your allium bulbs. By applying a few simple tricks, you can keep the quality of your bulbs in top condition. Keep reading to start your journey from Bulb to Bloom.

Meet Gerrit-Jan

Meet the allium grower who accompanies you during your journey from bulb to bloom.

1. Received your order but want to store the allium bulbs? First, check your bulbs for dehydration, rot, or potential diseases.

If you've received your order, it's advisable to first check the condition of your allium bulbs. When it comes to storing allium bulbs, be aware that they are 'alive'. Thoroughly inspect your allium bulbs for signs of dehydration, rot, or possible diseases. If you notice any issues, please contact us. We're happy to assist, and if there's any problem, we'll promptly resolve it by providing you with new bulbs. The same advice applies if you've purchased flower bulbs from another seller.

2. You can store allium bulbs in a breathable packaging

Storing Allium bulbs in The Bulb Farmers' breathable pouch
If you've received your order from The Bulb Farmers, you can store the allium bulbs in the pouch they were delivered in. The air holes in the pouch allow them to breathe comfortably.

Storing Allium bulbs in newspaper or a shoebox
If the pouch has already been opened (accidentally) or if you've purchased allium bulbs from another seller without a breathable pouch, don't worry. You can also store allium bulbs in newspaper, a shoebox (with some holes), or an egg carton. Alternatively, you can store your allium bulbs in a net bag and hang them up (an old mandarin bag, for example).

3. Storing Allium bulbs in a dark, cool (17°C - 20°C), and dry place

If you've reached the point of packing, you can store your allium bulbs in a dark, cool, and dry place. However, be cautious: storing allium bulbs in a different room temperature can reduce their quality. It's a shame to let that happen, and we certainly want to prevent it. Therefore, when choosing a spot, consider the following:

  • Dry
  • Dark
  • A consistent room temperature (17°C - 20°C)
  • A well-ventilated area. Your bulbs appreciate a bit of airflow.

4. Where in the house can you store allium bulbs?

You are not limited to one place. You can store allium bulbs in various places in the house. Possible places to consider:

  • A pantry or kitchen cabinet
  • A cellar or pantry
  • A shed or garage

5. You can store allium bulbs for up to 6 months

You can store allium bulbs for a period of about 6 months. If you receive your order during the planting season and also plant them during that season, then the storage period doesn't matter. However, if you have dug up your bulbs by the end of spring/beginning of summer, it's good to keep this in mind. Store them under ideal conditions as explained above, and you can enjoy endless summers.
