The Bulb Region

The Bulb Region, globally renowned for Dutch flower bulb culture. Besides tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, and dahlias bloom here.

This region, located between the beach and the city, officially stretches from the Old Rhine west of Leiden to the area west of Haarlem. The success of this region and its blooming bulbs is due to the sandy soil.

The conditions for flower cultivation are highly favorable, thanks in part to the climate. There is ample rainfall from the nearby sea, and combined with the coolness of spring, this is a perfect combination for a colorful flower spectacle in the summer.

Bulb Craze

Bulb cultivation originated at the end of the 16th century near Haarlem and resulted in a true tulip mania. This success peaked around 1634 and was unprecedented; unfortunately, it suddenly came to an end in 1637.

This phenomenon is known today as the so-called tulip craze or bulb frenzy. It is a commonly used metaphor for a major economic bubble. Fortunately, these bizarrely high prices are behind us.

For a small price, everyone now has the opportunity to plant special flower bulbs in the ground and enjoy the most beautiful flowers in spring.

Keukenhof

The Bulb Region offers many activities for a fun day out. The activity that tops the list by far is Keukenhof. This is a colorful flower park northwest of Lisse.

The blooming heart of the Bulb Region. Each year, various types of bulbous plants from different horticultural companies throughout the Netherlands are exhibited here. The park was founded in 1949 and covers an impressive 32 hectares. Before the coronavirus pandemic, the park welcomed over a million visitors annually.

The History

The Keukenhof is located on the estate of Keukenhof Castle. This originated in 1642 when a country house was built in the Keukenduyn of Teylingen Castle. This country house has grown into a castle and covers an area of over 200 hectares. Architects Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher designed the garden in the English landscape style.

This still forms the basis of the Keukenhof. In 1949, a group of flower bulb growers came up with the idea to hold an exhibition on the estate. This is the official start of the annually recurring blooming flowers in Keukenhof Park.

In 1950, the year after the opening, the park welcomed as many as 236,000 visitors. Over the past 72 years, Keukenhof has grown into a great success.
